Vet School Interview : Revisited

post iv, with another future dr :)

Assalamualaikum, hi!

This might be my 5th draft but most preferably my first post for August :D It feels great to be back, Alhamdulillah. In less than 10 days, this girl will be setting foot in her degree life - as a vet student in UPM. It still feels surreal to actually say this, let alone putting it into visible words. A huuge blessing, really. For the past four months, the thought of getting to this point never left my conscience. It was what triggered my compulsive eating and slacking and hey, insomnia - the friend that turned me into a night owl on days I felt like a mess.

And then recently, I decided to firmly fix a morning routine to reset myself into being the morning person i ideally want to be. To be honest, being able to stick to a beautiful routine in the morning is a blessing on its own pedestal.

Thank God, its also why I'm here right now :)

Prepping ಠ◡ಠ

Going back to May, i remember having a small group of friends from asasi whom helped a lot en route to getting the course. Pia, Nico and I banded together and we went volunteering at PAWS Petaling Jaya, shopped for sabun tanah and iv clothes afterwards and on another day, went for a stroll around the vet faculty and its hospital. Well, as far as I can remember, we were pretty much aware of each other's goal since our foundation days so we helped each other out ever since. It's the mutual dream of becoming a vet that brought us closer to each other, to the point that we pushed ourselves to get the highest band we could for MUET ( yeaa we all repeated except for sensei pia and ah, thank paan oso) and of course, scoring our exams. A senior told me that you should at least ace your bio and chem with an overall of 3.6  PNGK at the end of foundation/matrics. Regardless, just aim for that 4.0 peeps. I cry a lot while studying too but alhamdulillah, He gave me a 3.9 even when I thought I'd only settle for a mere 3.5. Lets try to have more faith in ourselves ok?

we work ok

In other words, you're obviously gonna meet a lot of competition for the vet course. If you're now in Asper, don't be overwhelmed seeing 10 hands from your kuliah shooting skywards whenever your lecturer asks, " Sapa sini nak ambik course vet?!"

Chill. Its good and all to be rivals but lets keep it healthy and less pressuring ok?

studying for our repeat MUET papers. Status : brain dead and pasrah

Other than moral support and animal experience, there's the proper clothes you should be wearing. Try to look as presentable and as formal as possible. You have to decide that for yourself of course. Besides that, if you already have a burning passion for animals, then i guess you're good enough to go! I mean, you must've watched a lot of natgeo documentaries or knew a couple of vets you idolize and also if you have pets - make sure you know everything about them.

Trust me. I was asked whether or not my red-eared terrapins were an invasive species or not ._.

The Dreaded Day (╥﹏╥)

seconds before saying " goodbye jo yee, goodluck!!"

I had mine on the... 27th of May i think?- The first day! as there were three days to which the interview was dragged. (see, told you ramai pesaing) Yea. Also, mine was at 8.30 a.m. , held at the vet faculty itself. Some kids got interviewed in classrooms whereas lucky things like me got the dean's meeting room which was located inside the administration office ahaha oof, good times. I was nervous as heck.

So basically i had two lecturers ( who were ofc, doctors as well)  interviewing me. I had a table and a chair for myself and across the room like, three tables in front of me was where they sat. Jauh kan.

So, watch your voice projection.

I got the last turn in my group of six so at the end when it was my turn to go, I looked around only to find empty chairs staring back at me....no peers to signal a 'good luck!' before I creaked the door open. oh yea! Except for that one clerk lady haha she said i looked really scared. Before that, a man looking in his mid 40s popped his head out of the room and called me in with a smile. Ah, he looked super friendly, well, not until he started questioning ofc. Bismillah, ingat balik semua yg Fatimah pesan. Without looking, i barged into the room rather triumphantly with a "Assalamualaikum~" in a tone people would normally use in eid, masa beraya rumah orang.

Silence.
Ah, tak disambuttt. Mana taknya dah sorang tu is an indian lady and the guy who i assumed was a muslim only had a mamak face but that was thattt. My 'good morning' was immediately swallowed deep into the pits of my stomach. The butterflies which were in there not too long ago were too embarrassed of me, they dissipated into thin air :'D

After greeting, I was told to immediately hand over my certificates (+ a catbook of my cats at home which my mom insisted me to bring that day) on their table and so I did. Dr Man covered the silence with a warm smile saying, "Good Morning, please have a seat" And so it all started from then on.

I know what I said earlier during the prepping part was super lengthy, I honestly started reading up only 3 days before the iv. Besides, I had a feeling that regardless of how much we drill for the iv, an interview is an interview. They'd have to value your character and morale above all else (rather than just being a plain booksmart) So just be yourselves! If the thought of being a vet had only seriously came up a few days before iv then act that way! You might not know a lot about animals or being a vet, (hey, i dont think any of the other applicants are any better unless they're a vet themselves) but hey the feeling's there. The drive is there. You're there! Just pray that your honesty will eventually reach them.

I think that's exactly what interviews are for.

Anyway, Dr Man and Dr Woman were both lovely people. It was a two way conversation, they laughed at my decision of keeping my neutered cat indoors and my un-neutered ones roaming free, they asked about my dreams and they said "I'm sorry, I'm only trying to provoke you" with a sorry-not-sorry face, aaand overall it went ok, Alhamdulillah. 20 minutes well spent!

I mean, I really can't help it when someone says "Tell me your dreams". I can definitely go on forever. Well, good thing I didn't tho. It's best to keep things short and concise added with a dash of eagerness in an iv. Idk, I never went through any ivs before this. I was too scared to apply for any scholarships :"D

Roughly 2 Months Later´ ▽ ` )ノ

ernie, my little prince!
 The wait has been excruciatingly painful to say the least. Oof, dark days. So I'm just gonna drop this;

But as you wait, please busy yourself and pull yourself closer to Him. Serve your parents, and get to know yourself! Be productive during the "wait", grow and blossom during the "wait", but never "torture" yourself by waiting.

And here we are in the present with me, feeling just the same as always - dazed. Not all of us made it through to the end as some had family issues (which i have to undergo as well) and well, maybe it was just not written in the books. What I do know, is that He surely has only the best intentions when it comes to us. And I want us all to have that firm, firm belief grounded in our heads.

I remember having to bury 9 cats in a span of  a week and it felt like a really bad omen that I wasn't gonna make it. I couldn't even hasten my cat's vaccinations, or read up on the common and almost unavoidable viruses beforehand. I broke down, even when I repeatedly told myself this was all just a test. You might say they were just cats, but in a way, the occurrence reflected the weaknesses only I know of.

And then I got the offer.

An opportunity to turn things around.
Not just my house, but inshaAllah the whole world as well!

I remembered laughing in disbelief when i got the results.
Aren't His plans and timing just perfect?

a fan art, haha thanks imran! I just had to commemorate it somewhere
